Despite the record-breaking heat, this year’s Long Night of Science once again brought many visitors to the Interactive Media Lab, giving us the opportunity to share our latest research and projects.
In our large lab (APB/2042), visitors explored three interactive demonstrations: the prototype behind our latest CHI publication “Beyond Links”, which investigates new visual representations for multi-view relationships; an immersive Virtual Reality experience that brings data-driven storytelling to life through the metaphor of a basketball court; and the Climate Time Machine, an LLM-powered storytelling application that enables users to explore historical weather data interactively. We also hosted an information booth for the upcoming SciFi-VIS Workshop at IEEE VIS 2026, co-organized by Julián Méndez.
In our small lab (APB/2044), we showcased our DFG-funded tVISt project on data visualization beyond planar displays, featuring a range of unconventional display technologies. Visitors could also experience BacteriaZoom, an Augmented Reality application developed as part of the Bacteriopolis project in collaboration with the Chair of General Microbiology, allowing them to explore a 3D model of a bacterium. At another station we showed the 3D Interactive Operating Room, originally created as an exhibition for the MS Wissenschaft together with the National Center for Tumor Diseases and CeTI, where visitors could interact with virtual medical staff and perform a robot-assisted gallbladder removal. Finally, our interactive tabletop invited guests to try a variety of collaborative and competitive applications.
