Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is „a generic term, which combines the understanding of the way people work in groups with the enabling technologies of computer networking, and associated hardware, software, services and techniques.“ (Wilson, 1991) In this seminar, we look at different solutions and studies published by researchers on the topic, specifically novel systems, computer-supported tools, methods and experiments that facilitate and help us better understand collaborative work.
The format of the seminar consists of a series of student presentations and discussions about various aspects of CSCW (but with a focus on human-computer interaction) based on published research work. Each session (double-„hour“) includes two rounds, where a round is a 25-minute presentation given by a first student about a chosen research paper, followed by a review given by a second student and a group discussion with the whole class. A general introduction to CSCW and a detailed description of the requirements will be given at the first session on 17.04. You will then have a week to decide, whether you want to attend the seminar or not. If you are not sure yet, we encourage you to still register for the seminar and come to the first session to help you make up your mind, even if you are on the waiting list. It will not be possible to register and therefore attend after the first week of the semester. Please also note that attendance at every session is mandatory, even if you are not presenting or reviewing on that day.
The grade given for this seminar will be based on the quality of the presentation, the review, the written report submitted after the presentation, overall participation in the group discussions and attendance regularity.
