Dagstuhl Seminar on Mobile Data Visualization

From July 14 to 19, we participated in the Mobile Data Visualization seminar at Schloss Dagstuhl. As a follow up of our CHI 2018 workshop, this interdisciplinary seminar was co-organized by Raimund Dachselt together with Eun Kyoung Choe (University of Maryland), Petra Isenberg (INRIA Saclay), and Bongshin Lee (Microsoft Research). Among the 25 participants, also Ricardo Langner and Tom Horak from our lab followed the invitation.

As an uniqueness of Dagstuhl, the seminar run for one week in the remote location of the castle allowing for in-depth discussions about the state and future of mobile data visualizations. More specifically, different facets of the timely topic were discussed in various breakout groups, talks, and tutorials. Among others, this included the definition, evaluation methods, responsiveness, immersion, or social and ethical aspects. The results will be published soon in a Dagstuhl report. Four Contributions at the 2019 ACM CHI Conference

At this year’s ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), we will present four accepted contributions – 1 full paper, 1 interactivity, 1 doctoral consortium participation, and 1 workshop contributions. The ACM CHI is the biggest and most important conference in the field of human-computer interaction and will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, UK from May 4 to 9, 2019. We are particularly proud to present our full paper Vistribute: Distributing Interactive Visualizations in Dynamic Multi-Device Setups. The paper is the result of a cooperation between Tom Horak and Raimund Dachselt with Andreas Mathisen and Clemens N. Klokmose from Aarhus University as well as Niklas Elmqvist from the University of Maryland. The focus of the work is on automatically distributing interactive visualizations in multi-device setups. Successful Participation at the IEEE VIS 2018 in Berlin

For the second time in its history, the IEEE VIS conference took place in Europe: from October 21 to 26, researchers, students, and practitioners from all over the world came together in Berlin to present and discuss the latest developments in visualization research. From the Interactive Media Lab, Ricardo Langner, Tom Horak, and Raimund Dachselt participated and presented our own work. On Wednesday, Ricardo gave a well-received talk on our paper evaluating Multiple Coordinated Views at Large Displays for Multiple Users. Later on Wednesday, Tom and Ricardo showed two posters during the poster session: Comparing Rendering Performance of Common Web Technologies for Large Graphs and Towards Visual Data Exploration at Wall-Sized Displays by Combining Physical Navigation with Spatially-Aware Devices, respectively.

Nine Contributions & Honorable Mention Award at ACM CHI 2018

At this year’s ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), our group presents nine accepted contributions – 1 full paper, 2 Late Breaking Work articles, 2 demonstrations, 1 co-organized workshop and 3 workshop contributions. The ACM CHI is the biggest and most important conference in the field of human-computer interaction and will take place in Montreal, Canada from April 21 to 26, 2018. We are particularly pleased about the honorable mention award (top 5%) for our full paper When David Meets Goliath: Combining Smartwatches with a Large Vertical Display for Visual Data Exploration. The paper is the result of a cooperation from Tom Horak and Raimund Dachselt with Karthik Badam and Niklas Elmqvist from the University of Maryland. The focus of the work is the combination of smartwatches and large interactive displays for data analysis. We will also present the corresponding prototype of this work in an accompanying CHI Interactivity demonstration.

Doctorate Martin Spindler

With Martin Spindler another PhD student of the Interactive Media Lab Dresden very successfully defended his dissertation on February 12, 2018. Congratulations from all of us on this impressive achievement, Martin! The topic of the dissertation was “Tangible Displays”, which comprises, among others, six (!) full papers and one journal article. We were able to win Prof. Dr. Jürgen Steimle of Saarland University as external supervisor. As the PhD was started in Magdeburg, some ceremonial traditions from Magdeburg enriched the festivity in Dresden. Afterwards, Martins success was celebrated in a restaurant at the campus of Technische Universität Dresden. The doctorate supervisor, Raimund Dachselt, provides some impressions of this special day in a photo gallery.

Again, we congratulate Martin on his dissertation and wish him all the best for the next chapter in his life.

Paper and Poster at IEEE VIS 2017 in Phoenix, AZ, USA

The IEEE VIS, the leading conference on visualization research, took place in Phoenix, Arizona, USA from October 1 to 6. Ricardo Langner and Tom Horak represented the Interactive Media Lab with both a paper and a poster. On Tuesday, Ricardo gave his talk on our paper VisTiles: Coordinating and Combining Co-located Mobile Devices for Visual Data Exploration in the opening session of the InfoVis track. Notably, the first ideas for VisTiles were presented as a poster at VIS last year, received an honorable mention, and became now a full paper. Our second contribution was presented on Wednesday: Tom showed and explained our poster Improving Value Driver Trees to Enhance Business Data Analysis (poster PDF) during the poster session. Again, IEEE VIS has been an exciting and inspiring conference as also can be seen in our photo gallery.

Successful Closing of the International Spring School „smart@work“

From March 5 to 11, the International Spring School on Human Technology Cooperation “smart@work” was held at the Technischen Universität Dresden with 22 participating PhD students and Post-Docs from 15 different countries. During three keynotes, four talks and five workshops, questions about the future of human work were discussed, i.e., how to facilitate cooperation between people and technology as partners on equal footing.

Keynotes, Talks & more: Exciting public events during International Spring School „smart@work “

With 22 PhD students and post-docs from 15 different countries, the International Spring School “smart@workHuman Technology Cooperation” will take place at the Technische Universität Dresden from March 5 to 11, 2017. Within the field of human technology cooperation, smart@work will focus on how human beings can interact with machines and computers in future work scenarios. The goal is to facilitate cooperation between people and technology as partners on equal footing, and to benefit from their respective strengths. This requires the expertise of different research branches, which is reflected by the interdisciplinary organization team—of which we as Interactive Media Lab are a part.
